SUMMARY:Books Between Bites - Batavia Water Utility History
DESCRIPTION:Batavia’s Books Between Bites 2024-2025 Season Announced  \n  \nBATAVIA — Batavia's popular monthly noontime book program\, Books Between Bites\, announces its 36th season\, to begin Thursday\, Sept. 19.   \n  \nThe series is hosted at the Batavia Public Library\, 10 S. Batavia Ave.\, from noon to 1 p.m. The public is invited to attend these free programs\, presented September through May\, on the third Thursday of the month (unless otherwise noted.) Reservations are not required. \nThe season continues Oct. 17 with Mayor Jeff Schielke sharing more Batavia literature with highlights of John Dillon’s new book\, “Batavia Water Utility History.” Dillon recently retired as superintendent of Batavia’s water and sewer department. The mayor also will share Mary Conde Wilson’s 1894 article on autumn in Batavia. Conde was the daughter of CB Conde\, and a local writer in the 1890s.  \nThe Nov. 21 the program honors veterans with Batavian Randall Niznick sharing his memoir “In Service to Others: A US Navy Seabee’s Journey.” His books will be available for sale and signing.  \n  \nThe December program will be hosted one week earlier\, on Dec. 12\, with naturalist Valerie Blaine discussing the book “The End of Night: Searching for Natural Darkness in an Age of Artificial Light” by Paul Bogard.  \n  \nOn Jan. 16\, 2025\, Karl Bruhn returns to the program to share Unique Structures of Fabyan Forest Preserve and Their Fascinating Stories. This connects to the Feb. 20 program by Vivien Lasken\, director of the Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden. She will discuss the book\, “The Woman Who Smashed Codes” by Jason Fagone. This is the story of Elizebeth Smith Friedman\, who worked for eccentric millionaire Colonel George Fabyan in Geneva for several years.  \n  \nLester Munson returns on March 20 to discuss Keith O’Brien’s book\, “Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose.” The April program will be hosted one week earlier\, on April 10\, when Batavia Historical Society President Dan Hoefler will discuss the book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” by James L. Swanson. \nThe 2024-25 season finishes on May 15 with Kathy Hubbard and Linda Sullivan discussing the book\n“The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt.  \n  \nThe monthly program is hosted in the large Founders Room\, which is located on the main level of the Batavia Public Library. Parking is available in the lot just south of and adjacent to the library. \n  \nPeople are invited to bring their lunch and eat as they enjoy the program and discussion. Lunch items\, beverages and baked goods can be purchased at Flyleaf Bakery Cafe\, located just inside the library next to the meeting room.
